Consider These Facts…

Screen time is the new pandemic. We live in a digital world where screens and technology are everywhere we turn.

Screens present unique visual demands that often make the eyes and brain work harder, and much differently, than when engaged with 3-D space.

Americans spend on average 10+ hours each day in front of screens, with some age groups like Gen Z as much as 9.

This impact on our eyes has led to widespread digital eye strain, headaches, light sensitivity, dry eye, interrupted sleep, and a surge in myopia, particularly among children who spend less time outdoors. By the year 2050, 50% of our world population is expected to be near-sighted.

Globally, at least 2.2 billion people have some form of vision impairment. In at least 1 billion of these, vision impairment could have been prevented or is yet to be addressed.

Almost 20 million people in the US are living with age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

Approximately one in 10 Americans aged 50 and older have the early form of AMD , and approximately 1 out of every 100 Americans age 50 and older have the vision-threatening late form of AMD.

About 3 million Americans have glaucoma, and it's the second leading cause of blindness worldwide.

Open-angle glaucoma, the most common form often has no early symptoms, which is why 50% of people with glaucoma don't know they have it.

Anyone can get glaucoma, but certain groups of people have a higher risk: African-Americans over age 40, those with diabeties or a family history of glaucoma, and everyone over age 60.

Vision loss can affect people of all ages; however, most people with vision impairment and blindness are over the age of 50 years.

Globally, the leading causes of vision impairment and blindness are:

- Refractive errors (88 million)

- Presbyopia-difficulty focusing at near (826 million)

- Cataract (94 million)

- Diabetic retinopathy (4 million)

- Glaucoma (7 million)

- Age-related macular degeneration (8 million)

A few more crucial facts:

Over the last 50 years, eye health has seen remarkable progress.

Advanced technologies, such as OCT imaging and retinal photography, now enable early detection of diseases like glaucoma and macular degeneration. Treatments like LASIK, advanced cataract surgery, and medications such as anti-VEGF injections have restored and preserved vision for millions. Public health campaigns and improved nutrition have drastically reduced cases of blindness caused by vitamin A deficiency, while better diabetes care has lessened the severity of diabetic retinopathy.

However, modern life has introduced new challenges.

We are not facing the same eye health as our parents and grandparents.

Americans spend on average 10 hours each day in front of screens, with some age groups like Gen Z as much as 9. This impact on our eyes has led to widespread digital eye strain, headaches, light sensitivity, dry eye, interrupted sleep, and a surge in myopia, particularly among children who spend less time outdoors. By the year 2050, 50% of our world population is expected to be near-sighted.

Artificial lighting and reduced natural light exposure further impact vision, while disparities in access to advanced care leave many in low-income regions vulnerable to preventable blindness.

While advances in eye care have transformed lives, addressing these modern challenges is crucial to ensuring healthy vision for ourselves and our future generations.

Your Reality Can, Should – and Will – Be Different

Many eye diseases are commonly seen with aging, such as cataracts, glaucoma, and macular degeneration, all begin with oxidative damage.

Fact it, many of the eye diseases are preventible, even the ones normally associated with aging eyes.

The great news is preventing eye injuries, inflammation, degeneration, and other eye concerns is possible.

Eating more of the right nutrients is one of the easiest and most powerful ways to prevent many eye diseases.
